Reasons to get Pet Insurance

You’ve set the date of departure and you’re itching to pack the car - but could there be something that’s slipped your mind? If you’ve yet to insure your four-legged companion this year, let’s talk about why now is the perfect time to do so.

Do you know what would throw a colossal spanner in the works for your holiday? A sick pet, no vet anywhere to be seen and a potentially very costly bill on your hands. Whether your pet is coming away with you or staying at home, I would advise you don’t let them go throughout the whole of December uninsured.

I know you’ve got a lot on your plate (and a lot of things to put on plates) over this festive season, so I’m going to run through the reasons you really should be getting on the task of finding a pet insurance provider. Getting pet insurance doesn’t need to be a cumbersome task by any means if you have the right information at hand (which is why you’re here, yes?). So here are a couple of key factors to show you why getting your pet insured soon is the way to go.

1. Pet insurance is always a good idea

You’ve worked hard all year for your money and now as the year comes to an end, I think we can all agree it’s time to let loose a little and enjoy the breathing space. Whether that means going on on holiday or enjoying meals with family and friends, you should be able to settle in and relax as we welcome in the new year. So what exactly could bring such peace of mind?

I have two suggestions: making sure your family members of the tail-wagging persuasion can get effective medical care when they need it and that you are financially protected when it does. I have seen too many shocked faces and listened to too many a shrill voice to have any other opinion about pet insurance: you need it. The price of veterinary bills, chronic medication and long term illness is just not realistic for an everyday person who never expected their dog would cost them so much.

2. The risky business of the silly season

December is crazy - we know this. People are behaving poorly and so many animals are left to their own devices whilst their parents play. This means that we see a spike in pet-related accidents and trauma during the festive season and we don’t want you to be caught unawares. Unfortunately, once something has happened and you are not insured, it all comes down to you as to how you are going to finance any surgery or treatment

If you’re only thinking of getting pet insurance now and want to get a low-cost plan that covers the emergencies and accidents only, you can get a pet accident plan for basic coverage from only R60 a month with immediate cover with Oneplan. The Oneplan Pet Accident cover is a good starting point if you’re just hoping to keep your dog and bank account safe should an accident happen during the holidays.

3. It’s too easy not to

Let me be upfront: if you had to find out how easy it can be to register with certain insurance providers after paying for an unforeseen pet emergency out of pocket, you’ll probably kick yourself. Hard. To shorten your search for the quickest, most effective insurance experience I’ve got something to tell you.

You can insure your pet in a matter of minutes with the Oneplan App - you could be leaving in two days and have your pet insured before you’ve packed the car. Do you know what that tells me? Not getting insurance comes down to being ignorant about the difficulty, cost and need for a comprehensive pet insurance policy. From registration to claims, I can guarantee you a hassle-free experience that we have come to never expect from an insurance broker.

4. Insured pets are protected pets

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could look after our pets even if we were far away? Well, that’s what this is. Putting your pet on an insurance plan means that even if you didn’t choose the best house sitter (who plaits cat hair??) you can still rest easy knowing that they will have access and admission into effective medical facilities even if you’re thousands of kilometres away. In fact, you can ditch the dodgy house sitter altogether if you have a plan that pays for kennel boarding fees - which is probably the safest place your dog can be whilst you’re away.

If this has inspired you to get on board the pet insurance train (welcome, we have a great time here), you can get in touch with somebody from Oneplan at your nearest convenience.
